Congress vs BJP
The entire nation is closely watching the competition between the two most powerful political parties in India, Congress vs BJP. Both parties have a decent presence all over the country. While both the political parties have a many black marks and achievements, let us compare which is the better political party for India. In this article we are comparing facts, figures and statistics of Congress vs Bjp. Please be informed that we are not going to deal with any personal opinions or accusations that are not proven. Let’s start the article Congress Vs Bjp
History of Congress:
The Congress party has a strong history. One important fact to note is that the Indian National Congress is not formed by an Indian, rather a retired British officer. Allan Octavian Hume first started the Indian National Congress to bridge the gap between the then British government and the educated Indians. Then Mahatma Gandhi entered the scene and brought many changes like bringing down the membership fees. Indian National Congress rose to popularity after the great victory in 1952 elections. Jawaharlal Nehru became the hero of the country.
History of BJP:
The root of Bharatiya Janata Party is the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1951 by Syama Prasad Mookerjee. When the then Prime minister Indira Gandhi declared state of emergency in India, the common opponents of the Congress party forgot their differences and united as one, and formed the Bharatiya Janata Party. The party slowly gained attention and won the 1977 general election. Since the party gained more popularity by great performances in the country and the famous “Ram Janmabhoomi” movement, BJP became the largest party in the parliament in 1996.
Noticeable leaders in Congress:
Whenever someone mentions the word “Congress” in India, Ex-Prime minister Indira Gandhi’s face comes to the mind. She was called as the “Iron lady” of India because of her no nonsense type of attitude. She was instrumental in solving many defence related issues along with the famous General Sam Manekshaw. She was assassinated and that led to widespread protests against a particular community.
Next in this list is Rajiv Gandhi. He took the throne after Indira Gandhi. He tried his best in having a friendly relationship with the neighbouring countries but that also involved being friendly with Sri Lanka, our southern neighbour. Sri Lanka and Tamilnadu, a state in southern India is not so friendly following the genocide against Tamil speakers in Sri Lanka. When Rajiv Gandhi extended military support to Sri Lanka it is alleged that the leader of LTTE sent suicide bombers to kill Rajiv Gandhi. Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated and even now, three have been accused in that crime and are facing sentence.
Following the list is Rahul Gandhi. The keyboard warriors are having a great time making fun of him but it is believed that Rahul Gandhi has already the competitor for BJP following his decent stint in Gujarat elections. Taking over the party from Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi is up for a challenging stint because of the party’s many downfalls in the previous years. Rahul Gandhi also faced some accusations against him stating he is the beau of a drug dealer’s daughter. Let us not jump into any conclusions without any evidences.
Shashi Tharoor also makes it into this list. He is the one guy who can make even Britishers use dictionary when talking to him. His speeches are flawless, his statistics are unquestioned and he is a man of few words. He is one of the most talented politician in the Congress vs BJP competition. At the moment, Shashi Tharoor is the only person who can handle international relations from Congress, owing to his command over Indian history and international relations.
Noticeable leaders in BJP:
Obviously the first in the list is going to be Narendra Modi. Narendra Modi won the national election by a great margin. Not only in India, people all over the world admire him for his policies and acts that bring respect to India. He is not like other prime ministers India has seen, always surrounded by politicians or security. He has been spotted many times taking selfies with his country people making him fan favourite. Like any other politician, he is also accused of a few cases like the Gujarat riots. The judiciary body dismissed all the allegations and that makes him spot free.
Manohar Parrikar is one more famous politician from BJP who is famous for his down to earth personality. His short tenure as a minister under Narendra Modi was much appreciated. He comes from the union territory Goa, for which he is now the chief minister. Like a black spot in a clean sheet, he was trolled pretty bad for promoting Freedom 251, a project by a con firm for which he was the chief guest at its launch festival. Other than that, there are no noticeable accusations against him.
Sushma Swaraj, the present minister of external affairs is one more minister in Narendra Modi’s cabinet who can give sleepless nights to the opposition party. Her tireless efforts to help Indians in other countries are welcomed by people in other countries also. She can play a vital role in the Congress vs BJP fight. Though tough against our neighbour Pakistan, she still does everything in her power to grant medical visas to Pakistan citizens which shows her humanitarian side.
It would be a mistake if Atal Bihari Vajpayee is not included in this list. He made the headlines first by being the minister of external affairs under Prime minister Morarji Desai. He was the first ever external affairs minister to deliver speech in the United nations assembly in Hindi. Though his first period as the Prime minister lasted only 13 days, his next tenures were vital to the formation of NDA – national democratic alliance against the Congress. He was the one who formed a strong opposition against the Congress because the BJP was unable to prove majority in the parliament previously.
Landmark events by Congress:
Primary focus of the Congress government was in the economy sector. This can be related to Manmohan Singh, a person who knows more economy than the entire parliamentary memebers combined. When the entire world could not save their economy, India was safe with a GDP of 7.7% even when there were two global stand downs. In the financial year 2004-2005, the Congress led government increased the GDP to 100.28 lakh crores from a meagre 32.42 lakh crores. When the Bharatiya Janata Party left the prime minister post, our financial deficit was 5.5%, and the Congress government brought it down to 4.6%. Aadhaar was the brainchild of the Congress government which the NDA parties objected first but later used it for the Jan Dhan Yojana, the greatest ever opening of bank accounts for the poor scheme. Proper allocation of funds and support to the ISRO led to a very successful Mars orbit mission and Chandraayan mission.
Landmark events by the Bharatiya Janata Party:
Nobody could forget the most important achievement by the Bharatiya Janata Party in the Kargil war. While the Congress government could have resorted to peace talks and approaching the UN, Bharatiya Janata Party completely reverted back with full army force. Pakistan was left ashamed when the then Prime minister of Pakistan told the world that he did not know of a plan to attack India. Pokhran – 2, the second nuclear test following “Mission smiling Buddha” was a grand success by proving the world that India is a nuclear power and sent a clear message to the countries who thought India is weak. Swacch Bhaarat, a pioneer move by the Bharatiya Janata Party to restore India to previous cleaner version was widely appreciated by people all over the world.
Mistakes made by Congress:
First ever mistake was letting Sonia Gandhi take up the leadership. It is alleged that Sonia Gandhi hasn’t renounced her Italian citizenship. People of India are very patriotic and will never allow an Italian national to lead them from the front. Manmohan Singh’s silence is another reason why the Congress lost to Bharatiya Janata Party in the last prime minister election. It was widely propagated that a man of Manmohan Singh’s education and knowledge was silenced by Sonia Gandhi and other senior Congress leaders.
The Coal scam was yet another issue where the reputation of Congress was badly damaged. In addition to that, where SMS was the most important medium of spreading awareness, the government made the entire SMS service to a halt at that period through other Government bodies. The 2G spectrum scam was yet another factor that damaged the Congress, and can be said as the reason why Congress lost to Bharatiya Janata Party in the last prime minister election. We cannot say Congress was helping or benefitting from the 2G spectrum scam because the CBI court has given the judgement saying the accused are not guilty. But still, these cannot be neglected when considering the Congress vs BJP competition.
Mistakes made by Bharatiya Janata Party:
The Demonetization news: Many of you might think why this is not in the achievement list and in the mistake list. Though the idea behind Demonetization was brilliant, the way it was implemented was too dangerous. Reserve bank of India admitted that it did not have enough alternate currency to be issued in return to old currency notes. Banks did not have enough money and the distribution system was not monitored. An old man fainting do death after waiting for new currency notes for hours in queue was heart breaking. The notion behind demonetization was a failure as many corrupt people already had enough new currency notes neatly arranged in their homes. GST again is a brilliant idea but badly built. The government is changing the tax percentage like experimenting with a Rubik’s cube. Many small entrepreneurs are finding it difficult after GST. This is one of the primary propaganda whenever Congress brings the Congress vs BJP comparison. NDA government says it will be helpful only after a few years and we will take our words back when it turns beneficial.
Future of Congress:
Congress has seen better days. Congress should do better than what it is doing right now to stabilize its position in the Indian political scenario. Congress must try to explain the allegations against the party. Rahul Gandhi should be more careful in his speeches in public. His recent speech describing land area more than that of entire Earth was so funny that even Sonia Gandhi would have laughed at it. The party should have its visions and promises clear. Congress extended its support to Hardik Patel in Gujarat elections but it still did not make any clear promise whether reservations will be given to a particular community or not.
Future of BJP:
BJP is very clear in its vision and the path it is going is pretty transparent. Hindutva is the stand the BJP has taken up. Spreading Yoga to the world and making India proud is the first step BJP has taken. BJP is projecting Narendra Modi as its face and he has made a pretty decent image all over the world. Though Pathankot attacks questioned our national defence, the surgical strike shows the BJP as a party that is not to be messed with.
